On Midlife Transitions
As I approach my 55th birthday this month, and simultaneously look back on the decisions and events of the previous year, I see a visible thread weaving its way through this particular time in my life. Ever noticed that?
If you've been around me for a while, you know how much I love words and language. Here are a few words that define that thread for me:
Change. Transitions. Transformation. Grief. Heartbreak. Healing. Sheeding. Releasing. Unraveling. Appreciation. Less. Simplicity. Peace. Knowing. Wisdom. Adventure. Hope. Love.
If you're currently somewhere in the throes of midlife, I know that it can be an unsettling time and each of us goes through the needle in our own way. I've always found understanding and knowledge to be a comfort to me, especially when experiencing something I've never experienced before. My faith in a higher intelligence and my belief in a greater purpose help me stay grounded in the truth of the present moment rather than getting too caught up in the whirlwind of fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
What helps you stay grounded when life's waters get choppy? When the fabric of your life as you know it quickly unravels?
I recently finished reading a new book - Kokoro: Japanese Wisdom for a Life Well Lived by Beth Kempton. I highly recommend this book, especially if you're even the slightest bit interested in living a slower, simpler, and more meaningful life. (Be forewarned! Reading this book made me want to plan an extended adventure to Japan in 2025.) In the book, the author talks about this "midlife" time in her own life and refers to the general feeling of it as "midlife malaise". I think she hit the nail on the head with that one!
Navigating thresholds of any kind can be a tricky business. It may be helpful to seek out a trusted, experienced guide if you're struggling with this and would like to break free of the malaise and dullness of ordinary life ... because you know you're meant for more. If I can help point you in the right direction, send me a note by simply hitting reply on this email or book a time on my calendar for a FREE consultation.
Until next time ...
With all my love & gratitude,
~Michele
